In order to foment international solidarity, particularly in the Mediterranean basin, UNESCO-FIPC and the CAN have collaborated since 1997 on the Aschberg programme, which awards scholarships to visual artists for a two-month working residence. Up to 2003 these scholarships were given to visual artists from the Balkans.
Since 2004 the scholarships have been granted to visual artists from North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt). In 2006 the chosen artist was the Egyptian Mohammed Abdallah (Kuwait, 1983).
